Whether you have loved your profession or you have loathed every day at the office, finally reaching retirement age can feel like a real victory. Not only do you get to start doing what you love all the time, but you can also change your lifestyle by moving to a retirement community. If you want to look for a retirement community in your same area, by the beach, or somewhere in the desert, there are a few different things that you should consider looking at.
1. Single-Floor Living
Having a multi-story house may have been great when you were raising children, but as you age and retire, those extra stairs can be a bit of a nuisance. When you are looking at retirement communities, make sure they offer single-level living, which means that everything will be on one floor. By having your bedrooms, kitchen, and living room on one level, you are less likely to run into issues such as falling.
2. Public Amenities
One of the best things about living in a retirement community is having access to a lot of amenities such as a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, pickleball courts, or even a golf course. Although you will have to typically pay a monthly home owner's association fee, having access to all of these amenities (and not having to share them with young families) will give you the motivation to spend every minute outside doing the things you love.
3. People With Similar Lifestyles
Another goal of moving into a retirement community is to live around those who have similar lifestyles and who are in the same stage of life you are in. Before you move into a community, consider talking to some of the residents that are currently there. Do they have similar hobbies and interests? Can you see yourself having a lot of fun with your neighbors? If you do want a social experience when living in a retirement community, make sure that you have a fair number of things in common with at least a few people there. If you don't, you can always talk some of your own family members or friends into moving to the retirement community with you.
